Day 1 was challenging. I usually eat large portions, or I like to eat to put something in my mouth -- out for boredom or habit.
I had already committed to playing in a tennis social, which normally culimates in pizza and other decadent food to make up for lost calories. I played hard and drank plenty of water. And I came with a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese in my tennis bag.
While everyone was grubbing on Domino's Pizza and pulled pork slapped between wedges of Hawaiian roll buns, I was drinking my 3rd bottle of 33.3oz water and eating spoonfuls of my cottage cheese.
I survived and didn't fall into temptation! I did suffer a headache most of the day, which I attribute to the drastic change in sodium and sugar, plus a sore shoulder.
When I woke up this morning, the headache was gone but my stomach was cramping pretty badly. I warmed up the Medifast peach oatmeal and made some espresso before a wedding client meeting. I grabbed my pre-packaged cottage cheese and celery/olive snack pack on the way out.
My clients invited me to lunch but I declined and let them know I was on a new program and sticking to it. Whew! Saying yes to myself is getting easier...
For the rest of the day, I preoccupied myself with planning my meals for the rest of today and the next two. I ate 5oz of cod with a cup of kale, tomatoes with rice wine vinegar and sauteed mushrooms. I felt very full after eating but I couldn't shake the stomach cramps.
Then I discovered why. My period had started early. Ugh! No wonder I was feeling a bit weird and thinking of chocolate all day yesterday and today.
A friend, who's a chef, came by soon afterwards and he was excited to share the result of a recipe he had tested with his partner: Filipino spaghetti. I declined the pasta but said I would have a spoonful of the marinara, avoiding the large chunk of cured sausage. I am trying to not to deprive myself of moments like these -- to enjoy the thoughtfulness of a friend. I measured an ounce and it was delicious.
It's 8:47pm right now, and I believe I've eaten all the allowable food I can. I'm a little nervous because I'm supposed to eat every 2 hours until I go to bed, which is normally midnight! I've still got the stomach cramping and I'm not sure if it's actual hunger or just the menstrual symptoms. How do you deal with Aunt Flo?
